Team manager Masilina Raumakita correspondedthat the girls were adapting quickly to the weather in Vietnam upon their arrival. She said they were informed of the aggressiveness and harshness of oriental teams. Raumakita said they are working on maximizing everything girls could experince at Seniloli’s club.
We’ve finally arrived into Ho Chi Minh City, our host, Anaseini’s manager was expecting at the airport to meet and pick us up. The girls had their first training with Anaseini’s club this morning from seven to nine o’clock in the morning and they are all in shape, Raumakita said.
The atmosphere here at Seniloli’s club is magnificent and the girls are adapting without any problems to it.
She said they had a lot to learn during their training at the club. Raumakita said the focus was to keep the players’ attention on the Asian understanding of volleyball.
She said the coaches were working overnight to polish the girls’ defense. The girls have learnt a lot especially the way the Asians play.
The coaches are reminding the girls on their defensive way of behavior because these asian girls have a height advantage, Raumakita told. The Kulawai Junior volleyball team is pooled with Chinese Taipei, Thailand and India at the Asian Junior Volleyball Championship.

Recently I decided to add plyometric training exercises to my workout routine. I’d tried to improve my jumping previously, trying different new ideas on for size. As I recall, I came in second place in the entire school during my junior year with a 34″ effort. The first place jumper made 36 inches and became a player for the basketball team at UConn. It seemed like a good idea to use plyometric training to improve my skills at vertical jumps. My first effort was Air Alert II. It was the opposite of what I really needed, and not effective.
The big promises of Air Alert II were all hype and no substance, I didn’t suddenly add ten inches to my jump! While these guarantees may have been appealing to a teenager, they were worth little more than the paper on which they were printed, and certainly not the $10 I actually paid for them. The program involved 5 different exercises: squat jumps, calf raises, step ups, leap ups, and burnouts. But, it was the intense schedule of workouts that represented the problem with the program, not the exercises themselves.
The main problem with Air Alert II (not unlike similar programs) was its requirement of five consecutive days of plyometric training. In addition, the volume of training was ungodly with 3-4 sets of 50-100 reps per exercise. Although it does some good, over training isn’t a wise decision. A hundred reps doesn’t do much for the vertical leaping, anyway.
Vertical leaps are simply a rapid, forceful upward motion. The best way to gain explosive strength is not high rep training. It’s similar to bench pressing. If you want to get really strong, you’d perform multiple sets of 1-3 reps with really heavy weights. Following that analogy, a program like this one would suggest that you complete 100 repetitions with an unweighted barbell alone. Perhaps you would gain endurance, but it is highly unlikely that you would build noticeable strength. Also, it would never be a good idea to work on bench press exercises for five consecutive days.
Take it from me, the best way to increase leg strength and vertical leap is to do low rep plyometrics training. The type of plyometric exercise somewhat dictates how many reps are best. Certain plyometric movements are optimized by performing merely five repetitions, and other movements require ten to fifteen repetitions. Regardless of the exercise, just remember to put in an intense effort. Push yourself by not doing simple things, but making them harder.
There are many definitions for plyometric training exercises, but the most accurate seems to be that they are intended to create more speed and power as you use them. For explosive speed and power, plyometrics are the best exercises around. In fact, vertical jump programs generally improve a person’s 40 yard dash time as well. Another frequent misunderstanding is the assumption that the calves are the main determinant of vertical leaping ability. Attempt to jump by not bending at the knee, and afterward, jump normally. It should soon become apparent that you are able to jump much higher by bending at the knee, as you are making use of the strength contained in the quads and hamstring muscles.
